What requirements have been established/fixed by the new European Directive in terms of fire safety?
How can they be best satisfied? What are Euroclasses? Girpi has some of the answers....

 


Fire safety


The new European directive on construction products stipulates that "a building must assure the safety of its occupants" in case of fire.  Therefore, firemen must be able to take action as safely as possible if a problem arises.  Thus, specifiers and fitters must choose solutions that enable these new requirements to be satisfied, which is the reason why it is necessary to select products with the best possible fire behavior.
 
EUROCLASSES:
A new harmonized classification based on new criteria.
Fire reaction Euroclasses will eventually replace the old classifications specific to each country.  In France, the M0, M1, M2, M3, M4 classifications will have to be abandoned.
 
New more stringent criteria:
EUROCLASSES defining the fire reaction of construction materials and products take account of three essential criteria:
1) development of the fire:
The intrinsic nature of materials from A to F
2) smoke release:
s for smoke:  s1 = no smoke;    s2 = smoke;    s3 = large quantities of smoke< BR > 3) production of inflamed droplets
d for droplets : d0 = no droplet; d1 = droplets; d3 = many droplets

Fire reaction of GIRPI’s HTA:
Fire tests have been carried out on HTA at the Trappes LNE (National Test Laboratory) for international certification of the product according to Euroclasses. 
HTA received classification Bs1d0 during the SBI test due to its excellent fire behavior.
 
LNE observations:
- Excellent behavior of HTA under fire.
- Almost complete lack of flame, almost no smoke, no contribution to the heat flux.
- Bs1d0 is the best possible classification for synthetic materials.

What do French regulations say about fire safety in buildings open to the public?
The July 29 2003 order issued by the Ministry of the Interior approves stipulations adding to and modifying the safety regulations for fire and panic risks in buildings open to the public.
 
For transporting cold, it is clearly stated (§ 8 in CH 35) that "pipes containing fluids used to transport cooling (called cold carriers) must respect the stipulations in § 3 in the article in CH 25" that indicates that pipes must be metallic or made of an M1 classified material.
 
The M1 fire classification is now imposed on air conditioning networks. 
This classification must be certified by a report.
